Why You’ll Love This Recipe

This bowl feels like dessert, but it is filling enough for breakfast. Frozen banana makes the base creamy and naturally sweet, cocoa deepens the chocolate flavor, and chocolate protein powder adds staying power. Almond butter gives the bowl richness, while granola, chocolate chips, banana slices, and almonds make the top crunchy and fun. There is no cooking and no reheating, which makes it useful when you want something cold and quick. The key is keeping the base thick, closer to soft serve than a drinkable smoothie. It is best eaten right away while the texture is still cold, creamy, and scoopable. If you like smoothie bowls, this one gives you the chocolate version without making it complicated or too sweet.

Before You Start

Use frozen banana slices, not fresh banana, for the thickest texture. Let them sit on the counter for 3 to 5 minutes so the outside softens just enough for the blender to catch. Do not let them thaw completely, or the bowl will become thin and runny. Measure the toppings before blending because the finished base melts quickly. A wide shallow bowl works best because it gives you room to add the banana, granola, chocolate chips, and almonds on top. Add the almond milk to the blender first so the blades can move, then add the powders and frozen banana. This helps everything blend more evenly.

Ingredient Notes & Easy Swaps

  • Frozen bananas: Frozen banana slices are the key to the thick, soft-serve texture. Let them soften for a few minutes, but do not fully thaw them or the bowl can turn runny.

  • Almond milk: Start with 1/3 cup; brands of protein powder may require up to 3 tablespoons more. For nut-free, use unsweetened oat, soy, or dairy milk and also replace both the almond butter and sliced almonds.

  • Chocolate protein powder: Chocolate protein powder adds sweetness, flavor, and protein. Different brands thicken differently, so adjust the almond milk slowly if needed.

  • Cocoa powder: Cocoa powder makes the bowl taste more chocolatey without adding much sweetness. Unsweetened cacao powder can also work.

  • Almond butter: Peanut or cashew butter works only when those allergens are safe. For a tree-nut-free bowl, use sunflower-seed butter, replace almond milk with oat, soy, or dairy milk, and replace sliced almonds with pumpkin seeds or omit them.

  • Vanilla extract: Vanilla rounds out the chocolate flavor and makes the bowl taste less flat. A small amount is enough.

  • Topping banana: Fresh banana slices add a softer, sweeter topping against the cold blended base. Slice them right before serving so they look fresh.

  • Granola, chocolate chips, and almonds: The estimate includes all three toppings. For dairy-free, verify the protein powder and chocolate chips. For nut-free, use nut-free granola, verify every label for cross-contact, and replace the sliced almonds as described above.

Description

Chocolate Banana Protein Breakfast Bowl is a cold, thick blended breakfast bowl with frozen banana, almond milk, chocolate protein powder, cocoa, almond butter, and vanilla. Ingredients

  • 2 medium ripe bananas, frozen and sliced
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened almond milk, plus up to 3 tablespoons more if needed
  • 1 scoop (about 30 g) chocolate protein powder
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon almond butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 banana, sliced (for topping)
  • 2 tablespoons low sugar granola
  • 1 tablespoon mini dark chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon sliced almonds
Beginner Friendly

Instructions

  1. 1Equipment: a high-speed blender or food processor, a silicone spatula, a wide shallow serving bowl, a regular spoon, a sharp knife, and a small cutting board.
  2. 2Take the frozen sliced bananas out of the freezer and let them sit on the counter for 3 to 5 minutes.
  3. 3The banana slices should soften slightly on the outside but still feel very cold and mostly frozen. Do not let them thaw all the way.
  4. 4Add the almond milk, almond butter, and vanilla extract to the blender first.
  5. 5Add the chocolate protein powder and cocoa powder, then add the frozen banana slices on top.
  6. 6Put the lid on tightly. Blend on low for about 10 seconds to start breaking up the banana, then increase to high.
  7. 7Blend for 30 to 60 seconds, stopping every 15 seconds to scrape down the sides with the silicone spatula.
  8. 8Check the texture. It should look thick, smooth, and scoopable like soft serve.
  9. 9If the blades spin without moving the mixture, stop the blender, scrape down the sides, and add the additional almond milk 1 tablespoon at a time, using no more than 3 tablespoons. Blend after each addition and stop adding milk as soon as the mixture moves; too much will turn the bowl into a drinkable smoothie.
  10. 10Spoon the chocolate banana mixture into the wide shallow serving bowl. Use the back of the spoon to gently smooth the surface.
  11. 11Peel the topping 1/2 banana and slice it into thin rounds about 1/4 inch thick.
  12. 12Lay the banana rounds across the top of the bowl.
  13. 13Add the granola, mini dark chocolate chips, and sliced almonds. Arrange them in stripes or scatter them naturally over the top.
  14. 14Eat right away with a spoon while the bowl is still very cold and creamy.

Tips and Tricks

  1. 1

Use Frozen Banana Slices: frozen banana is what creates the thick, soft-serve texture. Fresh banana will blend too loose and turn the bowl into more of a smoothie. Slice ripe bananas before freezing so they are easier to blend.

  2. 2

Add Liquid Slowly: the recipe needs enough almond milk to move in the blender, but too much will thin the bowl quickly. Start with the listed amount, then add only 1 tablespoon at a time if the blades stop moving.

  3. 3

Scrape The Blender Sides: protein powder and cocoa can stick to the blender walls. Stop every 15 seconds and scrape down the sides so the base blends evenly and no dry chocolate streaks end up in the bowl later on.

  4. 4

Top and Eat Right Away: The frozen base softens quickly. Have the toppings measured before blending, add them as soon as the base reaches the bowl, and eat while it is still thick, cold, and spoonable.
